The Girls' Friendly Society of the United States of America was established in 1877 stemming from the initiatives of two women hailing from Lowell,Massachusett and Baltimore, Maryland, in the United States who, unknown to each other, found inspiration in the newly organised English Society. Elizabeth Mason Edson, daughter of an Episcopal priest in Lowell, Massachusetts identified the potential of the society to offer support to working girls residing in the emerging American factory town. Subsequently, with the approval of the Engish Society, branches in the US were established at St Luke's Church, Baltimore, Maryland. This marked the inception of the GFS in the United States, with a nationwide expansion in quick succession.
Today GFS/USA operates in nine provinces of the Episcopal Chuirch, with branches extending across the United States and Honduras in providence IX of the Episcopal Church.
The organisation is founded on the belief that friendship is a divine gift that empowers individuals to thrive irrespective of their background. Embracing diversity GFS/USA is dedicated to aiding girls and young women in reaching their full potential, with faith serving as a cornerstone guiding its endeavors. The contemporary Girls Friendly Spcioety program is tailored to address the challenges encountered by girls and young women today.
